• “Let the word of Christ dwell richly within you with all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in songs and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” - Colossians 3:16

We sing together for two reasons: 1) It reminds us of the truth of God’s Word, and 2) songs are memorable, and they help us remember the truth throughout the week. At Beth Eden, we believe our congregation’s voices are the best instrument for our music, so our accompaniment is simple and understated. Occasionally, a single member or group will minister to us through music. While this may look like a performance, it’s a testimony in musical form of what God has done. We participate with them by thinking about the words of the song.

  • “With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit.” - Ephesians 6:18

We believe prayer is how we speak to God, so we pray publicly twice during our service. The first is for the missionaries and ministries we partner with who teach about Jesus worldwide. It's typically led by one of our mission committee members. The best way to pray for these partners is to know them well, so whoever leads the prayer will pass out letters before we pray so our church members can communicate with them. The second prayer is our pastoral prayer. In it, one of our pastors will seek to model biblical prayer with worship of God, confession of sin, gratitude for God’s good gifts, and requests on behalf of the congregation and individual members.

  • “Give attention to the public reading of Scripture.” - 1 Timothy 4:13

Twice during the service, we’ll ask those in the congregation to read aloud from the Bible. We start our service with a verse for the month chosen to emphasize a particular theme for the year. In the middle of our service, one of our congregational leaders will lead us in a congregational reading from the Psalms, which is like the hymnbook or prayerbook of the Bible. We’ll ask everyone to join in reading aloud at various times for both readings.

  • “Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” - 2 Corinthians 9:7

Worship is a value judgment, assigning worth to something; we can do this through financial giving. Those visiting don’t need to feel obligated to give, but our members will take the opportunity to give in the offering plates when passed or deposit a gift in the offering box in the Atrium after the service. Members can also give online. Our giving provides for our pastors, supports the maintenance of our facility, and funds the advancement of the gospel in our community and worldwide.

  • “For the gospel has for this purpose been preached…that though they are judged in the flesh as men, they may live in the spirit according to the will of God.” - 1 Peter 4:6

We spend most of our service listening to one of our pastors preach from the Bible. We practice expositional preaching, which means we open to a section of the Bible and explain what it means. Then, we apply those truths to life, asking how what we know to be true changes our lives. We strive to say precisely what each passage says, so the most helpful tool for you during this time is a Bible. If you didn’t bring one, you’ll find one in the rack on the back of the pew in front of you. Another helpful tool is the sermon outline handout you’ll find in the bulletin.

Whether you’ve visited other churches before or if this is your first time trying out a church, we want to help you understand better what we will do on Sunday mornings and why. We gather together each week to remind ourselves of who God is and what He has done for us through Jesus; we call our response to these things “worship.” Worship can look different in various churches, so we’d like to explain what those pieces look like at Beth Eden.

OUR TEAM

  • Jason Pilchard

    LEAD PASTOR

Jason grew up at Beth Eden Baptist Church and has served as the Lead Pastor since 2015. Prior to being called as the lead pastor of Beth Eden, he served as the Youth Pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Farmington, NM and in a variety of assistant roles at Beth Eden - including director of Camp Eden in Golden, CO. Jason is married to his high school sweetheart, Bethany, and they have two children Elijah and Zachary. Jason and Bethany enjoy long city walks, attempting home improvement projects and rooting for all of the Colorado sports teams. Jason is rumored to have once had a serious Diet Coke addiction.

  • Randy Vawter

    ASSOCIATE PASTOR

Randy began attending Beth Eden Baptist Church when he was 11 years old, after his family moved to the Denver area from central Illinois. He filled several ministry positions around Beth Eden until he joined the pastoral team in 2012. For ten years, Randy served as the Director of Camp Eden, before taking on full-time pastoral duties in 2023. Randy met his wife, Nikki, while working at Camp Eden during his college years. They have three kids - Peyton, Jackson, and Stella - who are all nice and smart, and you probably should meet them before you meet Randy. In his free time, Randy enjoys woodworking and sharing good stories with his family. He’s a big fan of both coffee and Coke Zero, but he’s not dependent on either (probably).

  • David Eilert

    CHURCH MUSIC ASSISTANT

David joined Beth Eden in 2018 and serves as the Music Assistant, leading congregational singing each week. He and his wife, Sarah, also serve as Beth Eden’s youth leaders. David teaches orchestra and band at a public middle school in the Littleton Public School district and enjoys coaching middle school basketball. While Sarah is a Colorado native, David grew up in Michigan, and the two of them met in college. They love walking CO trails, discovering new breakfast places in Denver, and cheering on the Broncos and Wolverines.

  • We believe the Bible alone, both the Old and the New Testaments, is the verbally, plenary inspired Word of God inerrant in the original writings, and that it is the sole final authority in faith and practice (2 Timothy 3:16–17).

  • We believe there is one God eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. (Deuteronomy 6:4; Genesis 1:1; Psalm 90:2; Matthew 3:16–17; John 10:30).

  • We believe in the deity of Christ (John 10:33; John 1:1; Colossians 1:15–19); His virgin birth (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23; Luke 1:35); His sinless life (Hebrews 4:15); His shed blood for atonement (Ephesians 1:7; Colossians 1:14); His bodily resurrection (John 11:25; Matthew 28:5–7); His ascension into heaven (Acts 1:11); His present life there for us as High Priest and Advocate (Hebrews 7:25); His imminent, personal return to rapture His church before the seven years of Great Tribulation (1 Thessalonians 4:13–18; 1 Corinthians 15:51–58; Daniel 9:24–27); followed by His premillennial return to establish His kingdom on earth (Revelation 19:11–16).

  • We believe that the Holy Spirit convicts of sin, righteousness, and judgment; makes believers children of God through the new birth, assuring them of heaven; and by His indwelling guides believers into all truth, enabling them to live godly lives (John 16:7–11, 13; 3:3, 5; 1 Corinthians 12:13; 3:16; 6:19–20).

He imparts gifts to all believers at His will. Sign gifts, including speaking in tongues, ceased with the end of the ministry of the apostles (1 Corinthians 12:4–7; 1 Corinthians 13:8).

  • We believe that Satan is a created being, the author of sin, the tempter in the fall, the declared enemy of God and man, and the god of this age. He shall be eternally punished in the lake of fire (Job 1:6, 7; Isaiah 14:12–17; Matthew 4:2–11; 25:41; Revelation 20:10).

  • We believe that man was created in the image of God; that he sinned and thereby incurred not only physical death but also spiritual death, which is separation from God; and that all human beings are born with a sinful nature and without salvation are hopelessly lost (Genesis 1:26–27; 3:1–24; Romans 3:10, 23; Romans 5:12–21; Ephesians 2:1–6).

  • We believe that the scriptural goal for every believer in this life is personal conformity to the image of Christ and personal separation from sin, worldliness, and conduct unbecoming to the Savior, with the ultimate attainment of this goal occurring at His appearing (2 Corinthians 3:18; Romans 12:1–2; 6:11–13; Colossians 3:1–4, 10; 1 John 2:15–17; Philippians 3:12; 1 John 3:2).

  • We believe that a New Testament church is an organized body of baptized believers practicing scriptural ordinances and actively engaged in fulfilling the Great Commission (Acts 2:41–42, 47; Matthew 28:19– 20).

  • We believe that baptism is a scriptural ordinance requiring immersion of believers only to be administered by a New Testament church (Acts 8:38–39; 2:41; Romans 6:3–5; Matthew 3:15–16).

We believe that the Lord’s Supper is a scriptural ordinance of the church to be partaken of by obedient Christians to commemorate the Lord’s death till He comes (1 Corinthians 11:23–29).

  • We believe that the local church is to separate itself from all affiliation, cooperation, or fellowship with those organizations which deny or by practice compromise cardinal doctrines of the Word of God (e.g., World Council of Churches, National Council of Churches, the modern charismatic movement, National Association of Evangelicals, and the ecumenical movement); but also that the church is to seek to develop scriptural relationships which will enable us to reach such with the true message of the Word (Galatians 1:8–9; 2 Timothy 3:1–5; 2 John 9–11; Romans 16:17–18; Mark 9:38–40; 1 Corinthians 5:9– 10).

  • We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost: the saved unto the resurrection of life and the lost unto the resurrection of damnation. The saved shall be in eternal conscious blessedness in the presence of the Lord. The lost shall be judged at the Great White Throne and shall be condemned to everlasting conscious punishment in the lake of fire (John 5:28–29; Matthew 25:46; 1 Thessalonians 4:17; Revelation 20:11–15)

  • We believe that God has commanded that no intimate sexual activity be engaged in outside of a marriage between a man and a woman. We believe that any form of homosexuality, lesbianism, bisexuality, bestiality, incest, fornication, adultery, and pornography are sinful perversions of God’s gift of sex. We believe that God disapproves of and forbids any attempt to alter one’s gender by surgery or appearance. (Genesis 2:24; 19:5, 13; Leviticus 18:1-30; Romans 1:26-29; 1 Corinthians 5:1; 6:9-10; 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8; Hebrews 13:4)

We believe that the only legitimate marriage is the joining of one man and one woman. (Genesis 2:24; Rom. 7:2; 1 Corinthians 7:10; Ephesians 5:22-23)

What We Teach About…

Beth Eden Baptist Church has a long and rich history in the Denver area. From the Highlands neighborhood where it began to its current place on the corner of 26th and Wadsworth, Beth Eden has long been marked by conservative doctrine, pastoral care, and a passion for the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Beth Eden Baptist Church was founded in 1893 and almost immediately made its impact felt throughout western Denver. Through work in the Highlands and Berkley neighborhoods, Beth Eden influenced young people through youth societies, the disadvantaged through a mission, and all peoples through the preaching of the gospel.

Beth Eden dedicated a new building in 1930 on Lowell Blvd just north of 32nd Ave. That church building still stands today and is registered as a Historic Landmark with the City and County of Denver. For nearly 80 years the congregation of Beth Eden ministered from that location.

In 1936, the first of three long-tenured pastors, Dr. Sam Bradford, was called to lead the church. Under Dr. Bradford, Beth Eden planted two other Highlands-area churches. In 1944, Dr. Bradford purchased Institute Park from Denver Bible Institute (now CCU) and renamed it Camp Eden. Camp Eden, located in Coal Creek Canyon, still operates as part of the ministry of Beth Eden Baptist Church.

Dr. Earle Matteson assumed the pastorate in 1964. Under his leadership Beth Eden Baptist Church moved to its present location. Dr. Matteson oversaw the founding of Beth Eden Baptist School, which still serves the Denver area by providing quality education in a caring, Christian atmosphere.

In 1991, Dr. Jim Efaw moved from West Virginia to become the Senior Pastor.  He brought with him a passion for missions that has driven Beth Eden’s desire to share the gospel, both globally and locally. Dr. Efaw's 24 years of ministry continued the long tradition of conservative doctrine, pastoral care, and passion for the Gospel that has marked Beth Eden's 100+ years of existence.

In August 2015, Pastor Efaw announced his resignation. Beth Eden Baptist Church immediately began a search that ended where it started - within our congregation. In October 2015, Jason Pilchard, one of the assistant pastors, was called to be the Senior Pastor.
